As a veterinarian I at first told many a client to never feed table scraps. I have long since changed my ways, and I now encourage dog owners to feed healthy leftovers.

These include the protein source, such as meat, fish, or chicken; also leftovers of vegetables and healthy carbohydrates such as potato, Sweet potato or brown rice.

This is one of the easiest ways to add variety to your dog’s commercial food and if you’ve yet to do it now is a good time to start.

A few points to consider:

Avoid feeding excessive animal fat

Be careful of bones that can splinter

Decrease the equivalent amount of commercial food, so your dog doesn’t gain weight.

Heal your pet at home!

Best Wishes,

Dr Andrew Jones, DVM

P.S. The whole what to feed your dog or cat is pretty perplexing, but I think I have done a pretty thorough job of breaking it down into HOW you can choose a quality food, including what foods are BEST to feed. You can find this in my Pet Food Report here:
