Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for people who are interested in
helping local civic and nonprofit organizations. Here are some
current needs:
Help staff free dental clinic
Professional dentists, dental hygienists, and registered dental
assistants are needed to provide free dental clinic services for
low-income residents of Fort Bend County. If you have the
appropriate professional credentials, consider putting your
professional skills to use in helping to reduce the waiting-list
time many of these individuals face in having their dental needs
attended to. Weekly or biweekly shifts are available at a social
service organization’s Stafford location.
Make a difference
English language tutors are needed to help Fort Bend residents
new to our country achieve literacy. Eager adult students from
around the world are waiting to learn English from dedicated tutors
who receive training from a Sugar Land educational agency.
Volunteer’s ages 18 or older that are interested in becoming tutors
are encouraged to register for the next tutor training session in
July.
Match makers
Help introduce potential pet adopters to their new lifelong
four-legged friends at a southwest Houston animal shelter. As a
match maker, one of the essential jobs you’ll have is to get to
know each dog living at the shelter’s unique personality. You’ll be
trained to explain the adoption process to the adopters and to make
sure dog kennel cards are correct and are on the appropriate
kennels. Knowledge of dog breeds and dog behavior is helpful but
not required. This opportunity requires a high level of physical
activity for someone aged 16 or older and a minimum 6 months of
service. All volunteers must bring a copy of their tetanus
vaccination records to the required orientation.
Additional opportunities
Artists are invited to share their time and talents with at-risk
children one hour a week for six weeks at local social service
agencies.
A Fort Bend area hospice program needs volunteers to provide
support to terminally ill persons and their families.
Help a new community center in Richmond open its doors and meet
the needs of low income residents by answering phones, scheduling
volunteers or assisting with the set-up of a corner market.
Musicians are invited to provide afternoon entertainment at a
senior living community in Katy.
Stock shelves and sack groceries in Stafford or Richmond at a
social service agency’s food pantry for the needy.
Teach life-skills classes to residents of a women’s shelter in
Rosenberg.
